Food For Thought

As we age , our nutritional needs change . Usually , our metabolism slows , which decreases our need for calories . If we don't make adjustments to what we eat , we will gain weight . But there are  some  vitamins and minerals we should watch as well . For a more detailed list specific to your needs , check with your doctor  or dietitian . Here are some general tips that will help you age healthfully :

Potassium :
Found in most fruits and vegetables , essential for healthy blood pressure . Some studies suggest that we only get about half the recommended amount of potassium .

Calcium and Vitamin D :
Keep  your bones healthy , if you are not getting enough , your body will use calcium stored in your bones , making your bones weak and brittle .

Fiber :
Known for its role in prevention of obesity , heart disease , diabetes and digestive problems , mostly found in whole grains , fruits and vegetables .
Here are a few tailgate safty tips :
* Store drinks in a separate cooler to acoid the frequent opening of the food cooler .
* Remove from the cooler only the amount of raw meat that will fit on the grill at one time .
* Return leftovers to the cooler with plenty of ice or frozen ice gel packs within two hours of serving , on  hour if the temperature is above 90 degrees .
Ok all you football tailgaters , let have fun and stay well .... see you at the games.
