Food for Thought : June is National Tea Month

Many of us reach for a glass of tea to quench our thirst. We have a special fondness for tea in the South, and while most of us drink tea for the flavor, it has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal properties. Both black and green teas have been shown to have some health benefits and most of those benefits are related to tea’s role in heart health. June is National Tea Month, so it is a perfect time to try some new brewing blends. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy more tea this month:
1 . Opt for natural sweeteners such as honey and fruit.
2 . Read the nutrition label if you are buying a commercially prepared tea. Many times they are full of added sugars and unwanted calories.
3. Look for tea that has a variety of flavors blended together.
4 . Many times tea has less caffeine than brewed coffee. However, you may want to look for decaffeinated varieties, especially if you are consuming tea in the evening hours. If you are pregnant, nursing or monitoring your caffeine intake for health reasons, consult your doctor before consuming.
5 . Be mindful that many herbal teas can interfere with medications and complicate certain medical conditions. Check with your doctor or pharmacist.
