For some people, the thought of cats brings a lot of negative stereotypes to mind. Cats are often seen as snobby, aloof, and selfish.

Black cats, a common sign of bad luck, have an especially bad reputation.

However, for the Rogers family, a certain black kitten has brought nothing but blessings.
For years, Roy and Bernita Rogers have tried to fulfill their dreams of starting a large family. Sadly, they were unsuccessful.
Every time Bernita got pregnant, the baby was born prematurely and died after birth. This happened three times; the Rogers were devastated and ready to give up.

“There’s a place that you don’t know will ever be filled,” Bernita said in an Oprah OWN video. “That love you have for a child, a child you can nurture and hold. And you reach a point that you know it’s going to be a hole in your heart, that nothing quite fills.”

Then Midnight came into the Rogers’ lives.
Midnight was a stray, and the lovable kitten immediately captured the Rogers’ hearts with his affectionate nature and demands for attention.

Within one year of Midnight joining the family, the Rogers saw another new addition.

Bernita became pregnant for the fourth time, but this time gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Stacey.

“I do believe Stacey’s birth was a miracle,” Bernita said. “I don’t know that I can put into words … how long we waited and how special that made her.”
The Rogers were determined to make sure nothing happened to Stacey. The baby monitor was kept close by at all times. Even Midnight seemed to recognize the Rogers’ worries, and constantly kept a protective eye over Stacey.

It was Midnight’s protective streak that saved Stacey’s life.
At six weeks old, Stacey suddenly became ill. Bernita took her to the pediatrician, where the doctor assured her it was only a cold.

Bernita’s parents happened to be visiting that afternoon. After getting home and putting Stacey to bed for her midday nap, Bernita joined her parents downstairs. As always, the baby monitor was kept close by.

In the middle of their conversation, Midnight burst into the room. He seemed frantic, jumping up and down on Bernita’s lap. While confused by his behavior, Bernita didn’t think too much of it.

After a few more moments of agitated prancing, seeming as though he was desperate to tell the Bernita something, Midnight bolted away.

Seconds later, a mix of frightening screeches and wails came over the baby monitor.

Terrified, Bernita rushed upstairs.

In the nursery, she found Midnight howling into the baby monitor. Immediately, Bernita checked on Stacey in the bassinet—her face was blue, and she was gasping for air.

“At that moment in time, I thought I was going to lose her.”

Stacey was at once taken to the hospital, where she went into full respiratory failure.

Luckily, she had arrived just in time. Any later, and it could have been fatal.

“This cat actually saved this baby’s life, for us … There’s no way we could repay him,” Bernita said.

The Rogers family now lives in Kansas City, Missouri, and Stacey has grown up.
“Midnight is a good friend. I love him dearly, because he’s always been around for me,” Stacey said, then 12 years old, on OWN.
