To alleviate any anxiety about her upcoming double mastectomy, breast cancer patient Doreta Norris decided to dance. Norris, 52, brought back the 2012 hit "Gangnam Style," dancing her way to the operating room at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Georgia earlier this month.
"I stepped out of my room and found hospital staff and doctors lining both sides of the hall," Norris says in a statement released by Piedmont Healthcare. "I heard the music playing and began to dance. It was an emotional dance. Staff came up to hug me, dance with me and give me words of encouragement. I truly felt like I could conquer the world."
Norris says she was inspired by a viral video of another patient dancing with her operating team. She wanted to "dance the cancer away, too."
"The hospital staff could have given me medications, wheeled me into the operating room on a stretcher and that would be that," Norris adds. "But the staff at Piedmont Henry cared about me, acknowledged my struggle and helped me overcome a difficult time."
Today, Norris is cancer-free. While she's still recovering from the surgery, she's looking forward to dancing again soon.
A hospital spokesperson said that Norris's final surgery, reconstructive implants, will take place in the fall.
