New Muppet - a Teaching Tool For Child Hunger

Sesame Street is spotlighting childhood hunger in an upcoming prime time special and debuting a new member of the Muppet family. Little viewers will be introduced to the plight of their less fortunate peers thanks to 7-year-old Lily, a new “food insecure” Muppet.

“Growing Hope Against Hunger” stems from Sesame Street’s
“Food for Thought” initiative, which is described as “a bilingual, multimedia program designed to help support families who have children between the ages of two and eight, and are coping with uncertain or limited access to affordable and nutritious food.”

Country singer (and father of two) Brad Paisley and his wife Kimberly Williams Paisley will also star in the one-hour special airing on PBS on October 9th. (Be sure to check local listings.)

Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash directed the episode and was
reportedly so serious about “getting it right,” that he repeatedly stopped scenes while filming to perfect them.

The special will feature four documentary vignettes of American children sharing their personal experiences with hunger, and will introduce kids to “innovative and community-driven solutions, including food drives and assistance programs.

So sad that it is even necessary to teach kids about this. Children should not go hungry in an enlightened democratic society. Maybe this will help to form different attitudes in the next generation.
